The Time Machine, Book Redesign

⟨The Time Machine⟩ is a science fiction novel by Herbert George Wells during the era of social stratification that followed the Industrial Revolution in the 1800s. The story follows the protagonist, a time traveler, who successfully experiences a journey to the future and returns to narrate his adventure. In this novel, the protagonist arrives in the distant future, 800,000 years ahead, where he encounters the wealthy bourgeois class "Eloi" and the working class "Morlocks," portraying extreme societal lifestyles, wealth disparities, and class structures.

The book design shows the contrasting situation and hierarchical structure between the Eloi and the Morlocks by dividing the paper into two sections: white paper on the top and black paper on the bottom. Additionally, the pages are randomly arranged to provide unexpected new content, mimicking the unpredictable nature of the future that the protagonist experiences while traveling through time, which may also cause confusion.

Furthermore, graphic motifs are inspired by glitches that occur during space-time displacement. Elements such as halftone effects, ramie paper, and exposed binding are emphasized to convey a nostalgic feel and to plainly depict the ongoing polarization of social classes in modern society and the inability to blend together.
