Modern Vyaz, Typeface Design

This prototype was created during Professor Bon Min’s Typeface Design class in the first half of 2023. The project draws inspiration from the unique character forms discovered while traveling through Russia and Kazakhstan, where both languages are based on Cyrillic script. Additionally, Kazakhstan chocolate served as another source of inspiration. "Modern Vyaz" is a reinterpretation of the Latin script, incorporating the decorative characteristics of Vyaz, a connected band-like Cyrillic script, to create an elegant and ornate aesthetic. Currently, only the uppercase letters have been developed. The typeface features a narrow width with a downward shift in the center, emphasizing bold and delicate strokes with pointed shapes at the bottom. Moreover, the typeface's distinctive asymmetrical and edgy serifs incorporate graceful wave elements that naturally flow to the right. Based on this typeface, a scarf was designed using decorative patterns, which include a quote from "Black Of My Eye" by Abai Qunanbaiuly, a prominent poet from Kazakhstan.
